Our seminars cover materials and information that build bridges in the community for people with differences and how important independence is for individuals as well as the community. The focus is on peoples’ abilities in training, the importance of positive training methods to build a healthy and peaceable partnership, and answers to such questions as what a person can do if they are allergic to dogs or afraid of dogs.
In addition information is provided on what is qualified as a disability according to the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA), public access information, and other pertinent information regarding service dogs for people with disabilities and their presence in the community.
For those considering training a service dog, resources are also offered for local support, national support and the differences between Program trained service dogs and owner-trained service dogs. Information on the long term commitment of owner-training as well as the level of training that is necessary to have a successful working team providing safety for the handler, the dog and the public.
For teams that are already working or are owner-training their dog without support, we offer a workshop that is geared toward further understanding of canine behavior. What their dog’s behaviors tell them about their dog and their training. We also cover the signs of a dog’s stress and when in some instances a dog may be determined not to be a suited to the job of service work.
How to determine what tasks a dog may be able to provide for a person pertaining to their needs of daily living, as well as the dog’s physical ability to perform those tasks.
Public access issues are presented and role-playing takes place. Teams have the opportunity to share their experiences with others encountering situations that may be common to one another providing a network of community among themselves.
We have done visits to children as young as preschool age. Our school visits include Service Dog Etiquette, Greeting a Team, meeting some of our teams in training and also have the opportunity help train a service dog. Children share their experiences with others providing further valuable education for their families and friends.
